Latest News: Major Funding Announcement

Northumberland Makers receive funding for creative community lab

Dec 15, 2017 Northumberland News

COBOURG — A proposed site for community innovation received an investment today from the Northumberland Community Futures Development Corporation.

Northumberland Makers, a local group of creators, innovators and makers with a goal of improving access to tools, technology and expertise within Northumberland County, received $30,000 from the Community Futures Program Social Enterprise stream to help fund the creation of a proposed space known as the MakerLab.

The space will be in a new business incubator called Venture 13 located inside the Northam Industrial Park. The MakerLab creates a space for collaboration and access to shared resources for Northumberland entrepreneurs, local manufacturers, schools, youth and the community.

“The ‘Maker Movement’ is about bringing together a vast array of talents, collectively, to collaboratively bring ideas off the ‘drawing board’ to life,” Northumberland Peterborough South MP Kim Rudd said. “Northumberland Makers is made up of a group of individuals who never want to stop creating, building, and developing better ideas and concepts.”

The space is expected to open in early 2018.

“We believe that making is a skill that should be accessible to all who wish to learn, and is a powerful basis for entrepreneurship and innovation,” Northumberland Makers president Phil Mandryk said. “We cannot wait to have a home base at Venture 13 to deliver community programming that offers individuals the opportunity to ‘learn through doing’ in an accessible social environment.”
